Alchemy

chasing rainbows that fade

as a shift comes about,

water droplets fall hard on land,

splashing about noisily

the muddy pavement becomes slippery

to walk on, a wrong foot there,

slide, wrestle with forgotten promises no

longer remembered.

thunder roars on high with dark clouds brooding

away, at nothing, still wind rises suddenly

then crashes on sturdy trees unable to hold

a canopy – the roof withers away, absorbed by

hungry earth eager to do more damage.

lightning strikes again and sends fire damage

to treasured harvest crops kept dry,

this time the fire demon chooses to reign like zeus

uncontrollable,

spitting smoke with dust into hurricanes joining

the party of nature.

what a sight!

prometheus escapes from his chains through all

the chaos,

takes up arms with hades to put an end to

such misery of having to go without his favorite

mohito while dionysus takes his liver for an appetizer

and beams with a silly grin.

out of the caves the boogeyman escapes,

makes his way to sleeping villages unaware.

whispered into their ears of dreams, visions, illusions

became real when the gods took up arms

against fallen men who have sought to become

their own god.

stupefied men and women of all ages looked aghast

at the accusations, “we’re devout followers, nothing more”

but hades rolled up the debt owed,

it was a long, long list – rainbow promises failed to deliver

the damn crowd raged.

and the gods all had different faces, each one looked to be

what men and women worshipped.

then the masks were peeled back, the skeleton

laid bare of ego kneeling before self.

someone has to be in control, ya know?
