a full stop. but that’s not satisfaction,
just – hanging in mid air, feels wrong
when feet should be grounded on earth.
like a tree, with roots digging in, seeking
water and the man tree tries to imitate a
large trunk standing perfectly still by night.
you can almost hear the breath, a faint movement
in the air: slowly drooping, the drowsiness
certainly resembles a moment near awakening –
the ground rushes up, each blade of grass becomes
an intense green though the green snake could really
be any blade; tongue punctures my skin, euphoria and dizziness
not that painful sore i anticipated. ouch. said the words
out aloud before a blissful smile at the moon
weighing my intentions; i began to dig deeper to find water
trying to become a rabbit and hide out forever.
it is more fun being a rabbit, with many exits,
i could always build another – green in the face,
i sought to capture the wise owl’s hoot: telling me that
i should stay in mid air. it’s a time stamp, a frozen moment,
nothing ever happens in that safe space. i know. i wanted
to tell the owl that the poison tuned me into a green snake,
i slithered about in brown earth: with eyes of a rabbit,
always digging deeper till i finally hit wall. the wall stopped
all air. i found earth holding tightly to me, maybe it mistook
me her child; then again i just might be hallucinating
when i became a green grass, found that being superficial wasn’t all
that shallow. beneath the earth, a rumble, damn rabbit
made a sinkhole – swallowed up by the darkness with a rabbit munching
away at grass. gave the beast a tummy ache: for there was no understanding
of a rabbit’s mind. it is all quite convoluted, all quite unnecessary. but the
teeth like a saw, took every thought away. fevered nightmares,
where the dead come back to life, why dig? each bone struck at the
belly, each spell lasted worse than the last. each bone singing away
to the god whose eyes are like the moon: doing nothing, just steadily
fading when the earth closed up again. the air moves faintly, a breath
from god, then venom vanishes and the racing thoughts quieted.
it’s a sanctuary, it’s a water of life, the darkness stopped. where is god?
in the cave, in the hole. mid air without feet touching ground, and god
was there too. bones rattled. god was still there. a snake charmer, a snake’s hiss,
god still stood. and a wall of flesh cutting off. in a hole, a wall is just a wall.
a sinkhole – and a see saw with one wall flying high up in the air. stick up mid way.
rushing into the core, the man-tree-rabbit-snake thought-roots-race-cunning
became one wall trying to talk to god. and god said: you do not understand my language.
all quite plausible, so the wall became a hole, and the hole
drank up everything misunderstood. and it was better than being in mid – air i say..
